Joe Paterno - Leadership Capacities

Leadership Capacities

Coach Paterno has demonstrated and has promoted moral purpose throughout his tenure as Penn State’s football coach. He has used his passion for the game of football to promote ethical values to the entire Penn State community. Ironically, winning football games is part of the “small picture” for Coach Paterno. Preparing his players to display honorable character is far more important to his vision. Throughout his career, Coach Paterno has built relationships within the entire Penn State community that will have a lasting effect for many years to come. From Bryce Jordan to incoming freshmen, Coach Paterno has built relationships through his affable personality, commitment to the university, and his overall approach to life. By donating to charities, speaking to the student body at pep rallies, and negotiating successfully for academic and athletic funding, he has created relationships that will have a lasting effect on the on the lives of many.

The process of change is something that Coach Paterno has successfully encompassed during his career. He has adapted his coaching style as the game of football has changed while still maintaining his values. His terminology and schematics have changed as the game of football has progressed. Furthermore, Coach Paterno adapts his team’s vision on yearly basis based on the strengths of his personnel. In a business of continual change, Coach Paterno displays the ability to manage change to create successful environments.

Sharing his knowledge with others is a major strength for Coach Paterno. He has continually demonstrated his ability to share his knowledge of football and leadership with coaches, players, and people outside of the Penn State community. By speaking at banquets and clinics and sponsoring camps, Coach Paterno extends his knowledge to diverse groups. Furthermore, he has shown the ability of making coherence through everyday decision making. Stressing academic achievement before athletics is one example of his strength to rationalize with his players. As quoted by a former player, “There’s an academic standard that Paterno goes by and, if you are not above his standard, you, you’re not going to get the opportunity.”

Joe Paterno - Leadership Qualities

Leadership Qualities

Observing Coach Paterno working on the sidelines, listening to his interviews, and reading numerous articles and books about his life helps me come to the conclusion that he would be best classified as a “controller’. His strong will and competitive nature are defining characteristics that would support identifying him as a controller. Also, it is in his nature to make decisions easily and rapidly if needed. Throughout his 43 year career as a head coach, Joe Paterno has demonstrated persistence through his commitment to the entire Penn State community. Controllers often display these characteristics. Coach Paterno’s secondary behavior characteristics would be best described as a “promoter”. Being out front and forceful as well as being an excellent communicator are traits that are displayed by Joe to his coaching staff and athletes. Furthermore, his enthusiasm for the game of football and Penn State University as a whole shows characteristics of a promoter. The characteristics of promoter are most evident in Coach Paterno’s involvement with numerous charities and fundraises that have gone to improving Penn State. Coach Paterno is no stranger to adversity. Being raised during the Depression, he was almost forced to leave his high school, Brooklyn Prep, due to the costly tuition. Through hard work and perseverance, Joe was able to graduate high school and to attend Brown University. After graduating from Brown University, Coach Paterno accepted a job as an assistant football coach at Penn State University. With aspirations of going to law school, coaching was supposed to be a brief experience. However, taking the assistant coaching job proved to be the turning point in his life that would lead to becoming one of the most prolific college football coaches of all time. During this time, he found his true passion to teach and fostered his inner strengths of motivator, communicator, and achiever.

Joe Paterno - More than Just a Coach

More than Just a Coach

At the age of 82, Joseph Vincent Paterno has been the Penn State Nittany Lions head football coach for the past 43 years. Throughout this time, he has accumulated 383 wins, is one of four active coaches inducted into the college football hall of fame, has won 2 National Championships, and has more bowl victories than any other coach. Following the 1986 championship season, Paterno was the first college football coach named "Sportsman of the Year" by Sports Illustrated magazine. Joe Paterno credits his success to his hate to lose mentality and belief that there is more to the game (life) than the score. He is a teacher who prepares his players not just for a season but for life. These values and a tenacious work ethic have created the success that makes him one of the most highly regarded coaches in America.

More important than his accomplishments on the football field, Joe Paterno has used his success to become the most prolific face of any college institution. In addition to his coaching accolades, he is highly regarded for his contributions to academic programs at Penn State. He has been leader in a major effort to raise millions of dollars to enhance Penn State’s academic programs. In 1966, Coach Paterno began his commitment to academic excellence by spearheading an effort to mend athletic and academics in the collegiate environment. As a result, Penn State's players have consistently demonstrated above-average academic success compared to Division 1-A schools nationwide. Teaming with Dr. Bryce Jordan in 1988, the two created a 5 year campaign which raised over $200,000,000, which expanded the educational oppertunities at the university.

While many marvel at what Joe Paterno has done for the Nittany Lions on the field, what he has done for his players off the gridiron will take them much farther in life than football ever will. Players from Penn State teams during coach Paterno’s tenure have been imbedded with exceptional values and have been subjected to sincere passion, which will have a lasting impact on their lives. I chose Joe Paterno as the focus of this assignment because of his ability to lead with unwavering values, his commitment to give back to his community, and his timeless passion for his chosen career. The mark that he has made on the Penn State community parralles with my goals for my educational career; inspire youth to maximize potential, improve the overall educational environment of our district, and foster a strong relationship between all residents in our school district and our stakeholders. All in all, Joe Paterno is a leader who inspires me to lead by example and take action.
